Hemp Straw House Schedules Momentous 'Bale Raising' for May 18th.
Barrie, Ontario.
At the north end of Barrie in the village of Dalston, Hempola Valley Farms has been working for the past year at one of its most interesting hemp projects... the construction of an octagon 'round house' using hemp straw bales. Unique in its design and numerous details focused on environmental responsibility, the structure is deemed the first hemp straw building in North America, maybe the world.
And hemp straw bales aren't the only things made from hemp going into this project. Kelly Smith, Co-founder of Hempola comments, "The list of hemp materials we're using keeps rising. Along with the hemp straw bale walls, we're also incorporating the new Enviroshake roof shingles made using hemp fiber and our new all natural HempWood finishing oil with many different colour tints. We'll be applying HempWood to several surfaces like wood and bamboo floors, kitchen cabinets, concrete sealant... and we're also very close to a blended Hempola varnish to add a shiny protective coating to many of these surfaces. Also on the list is hemp fiber stucco, numerous hemp fabric applications and few other little surprises. Our longer term research will focus on such things as biofuel for heating. Imagine us growing our own heating fuel and processing it right at our farm."
